\u201cWith my camera, I search for that genuine gaze, that combative part of beauty. My photography is an act of love. It\u2019s about knowing, about looking with wonder at those who amaze you.\u201d Letizia Battaglia \u2013 an award-winning Sicilian photojournalist and the first European woman to win the Eugene Smith Grant for her socially engaged photos \u2013 is the protagonist of the second temporary installation of \u201cMeraviglioso Reale\u201d, the latest edition of the public art project by the Off Site Art association that, with the US-based non-profit ArtBridge, has been accompanying the rebuilding of L\u2019Aquila\u2019s historic centre since 2014.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n

Presenting the perspective of one of the greatest champions of art and feminism \u2013 in 2017 The New York Times listed Battaglia as one of the world\u2019s 11 most influential women \u2013 her large-format photos are displayed as in an open-air gallery, covering the scaffolding of the future Casa delle Donne (\u201cHouse for Women\u201d), which is currently open in the\u00a0San Francesco neighbourhood and will become a feminine and feminist reference point and place of culture, research and services<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n

According to Off Site Art: \u201cThis place is a crossroads of community experiences, stories and needs. Battaglia\u2019s contribution is part of this struggle and resilience, a process of reconstructing the urban and social fabric for a city of the future that is open, inclusive and united.\u201d The new edition is curated by Camilla Car\u00e8, who chose the Palermo native\u2019s photos related to the environment and magical storytelling. \u201cWe selected the pictures that best describe the purity of nature and amazement, to share her perspective of poetic beauty with the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n
